The effort, he says, was inspired after reading "Nickel and Dimed," in which author Barbara Ehrenreich takes on a series of low-paying jobs. Unlike Ms. Ehrenreich, who chronicled the difficulty of advancing beyond the ranks of the working poor, Shepard found he was able to successfully climb out of his self-imposed poverty.

The biggest difference I see between what this article says and the book "Nickel and Dimed" (which I have read), is that the author of Nickel and Dimed took on jobs that non-educated individuals are forced to take every day because they had no education.

While he said he didn't use education in his background for resume stuff, etc., to get a job, the difference is still significant between someone who couldn't finish high school because they had to get a job to help feed their family and someone who was able to graduate from college with a wealth of knowledge and skills under their belt.

Huge difference, right there, if for nothing else.
