Odd as it sounds, you might shop in a junk yard or a used car parts place for a transmission. You don't need a new one, you need one that works.

Additionally, I'd get quotes of labor for installation of a transmission, because that's probably what they're charging you for.

ANd I'd also look at the cost of a new transmission itself, to see if they're trying to quote you higher than what it really costs, which again happens frequently.

The alternative is that there are some really great used cars out there that cost about the same that they're quoting you, so depending on what shape the rest of your car is in, that might be a way to go too.
